Dr. Juan C. León Isiano is an accomplished Veterinarian, Public Health Officer (PHO), and Senior Scientist with 25 years of experience in disease surveillance, prevention, and control, veterinary medicine practice, program management, research, and epidemiological investigations.
Dr. León has years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of small animal diseases, with a focus on preventative medicine, dentistry, soft tissue surgery, and pediatric and geriatric care.
Most recently, Dr. León served as an Assistant State Veterinarian and Chief for the Division of Meat Inspection at the Ohio Department of Agriculture, where he administered a meat and poultry inspection program, led strategic planning, managed a team of 99 inspectors, managed a $13M budget, developed policies and procedures, regulated sanitation standards, and collaborated with industry stakeholders.
Over his 23-year military career, Dr. Leon also proved his expertise in leading worldwide programs for the U.S. Air Force, including managing the Food Vulnerability Assessment program at 230 locations globally, and served as a trusted advisor to 100 PHOs and 750 technicians globally. His professional military skills include veterinary medicine, microbiology, animal pathology, organizational management, personnel management, financial management, public and international relations, process improvement (LEAN), epidemiology, livestock inspection, and animal disease detection techniques.
Dr. León is also an experienced Senior Scientist and educator, leading training and development for Air Force physicians and public health personnel, leadership, supervisory skills, and food safety. Dr. León also served as a Senior Epidemiologist at the USAFSAM Epidemiology Consult Service, where he led public health research efforts, epidemiological studies, and was the Program Director for the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) for the Consult Service. ORISE is a U.S. Department of Energy asset that enables America’s scientific competitiveness by training the next generation of STEM experts; conducting scientific and technical reviews; and evaluating radiation exposure, environmental contamination, and worker health. While in the position, oversaw the training of eight master’s level fellows assigned to the Consult Service.
At his last military duty station in Stuttgart Germany, he worked as a Public Health/Medical Intelligence Officer and Air Force Food Protection Consultant at U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), conducting strategic-level public health functions, medical intelligence analysis, and serving as a food protection consultant for the African Continent.
Dr. Leon is a team player with organizational and analytical skills, self-motivated, excels in working with broad policy/guidance. He also excels in communication with owners and clinic staff.
Dr. León holds an M.S. in Food Science/Safety from Colorado State University (2010) and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Louisiana State University (1997). He has completed military education, including the U.S. Air Force Air Command and Staff College, Squadron Officer School, and Army Officer Advanced and Basic Courses.
Dr. León is original from Ponce, Puerto Rico. He is fluent in English and Spanish, with intermediate proficiency in Brazilian Portuguese. He is the father of 4 children and lives with his wife Tonya.
